Scraps

Scraps is a category area for surplus, dismantled or end-of-use materials that may be suitable for recovery or recycling. Scrap should be compared by more than total weight: ferrous/non-ferrous classification, alloy type, piece dimensions, contamination, dismantling condition and loading requirements can all affect evaluation.

Use this classification, condition and pricing guide to compare scrap materials by metal type, alloy, cleanliness, physical form, loading requirements and other value-driving factors.

Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Scrap

Metal scrap can broadly include iron and steel materials as well as non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass, aluminium, lead and zinc. Correct material identification is fundamental to recycling and commercial evaluation.

Material and Alloy Identification

Metals with similar appearance can have different alloy compositions and values. Where possible, use product markings, technical documentation or reliable material analysis rather than appearance alone. Mixed-metal loads can be evaluated differently from separated material.

Weight, Dimensions and Physical Form

Net weight is important, but long profiles, sheet, pipe, turnings, cable and machinery parts can require different handling, cutting and processing. Large or heavy pieces should be assessed together with loading and transport requirements.

Cleanliness and Contamination

Soil, concrete, plastics, rubber, timber, oil, coatings or mixed metals can reduce the proportion of directly recoverable material. Separating materials by type and disclosing contamination makes comparison more reliable.

Condition and Origin

Corrosion, deformation, cutting or dismantling condition and the source of the material can affect handling and evaluation. Scrap from industrial equipment or plant dismantling may also require checks for oils, chemicals or other potentially hazardous residues.

Loading, Delivery and Logistics

Total cost can depend on site location, loading access, crane or forklift requirements, cutting needs, transport distance and delivery terms as well as the unit scrap value. Clarify these factors before comparing offers for bulky or heavy material.

Recycling and Compliance

Metal scrap can be recycled into secondary raw material. Waste handling, storage, transport and processing should follow applicable rules and authorised methods for the material concerned. Items that may contain hazardous substances should be assessed separately from ordinary clean metal scrap.

Scrap Prices

Scrap prices vary with metal type and alloy, net weight, purity and separation, underlying metal markets, physical form, cutting/loading requirements and transport conditions. Current quotations should therefore be compared on equivalent material and delivery terms rather than against a fixed visible price.
