Concrete spacer selection differs between columns, walls, slabs and foundations because reinforcement direction, load, formwork contact and geometry are different.
Slabs
Slab spacers support horizontal reinforcement above the form surface. Stability and contact area are important across larger surfaces.
Walls
Wall reinforcement is vertical, so attachment to reinforcement and resistance to movement during placement become more important.
Columns
Column cages require spacers that help maintain distance from the form surface while fitting the cage and stirrup geometry.
Foundations
Foundation and raft reinforcement can be heavier, so contact area and stability under load become important selection factors.
