Padlocks

Padlocks are portable locking devices used with lockers, gates, chains, storage areas and similar locking points. Selection should consider shackle diameter and internal clearance, the dimensions of the hasp or chain, the use environment and body/shackle materials rather than body width alone.

Use this page as a measurement and application guide when comparing padlocks for different locking points, environments and security needs.

Key Padlock Dimensions

Body width, shackle diameter, internal shackle width and internal shackle height determine physical compatibility. Measure the actual hasp, eye or chain before choosing a padlock by a nominal body size alone.

Standard and Long Shackles

Long shackles can provide extra reach for deep or widely spaced locking points, but unnecessary clearance is not always desirable. Match the usable shackle opening to the actual locking point.

Body and Shackle Materials

Brass, steel, stainless steel and other alloys may be used for bodies and hardened materials for shackles. For outdoor, humid or corrosive environments, verify that the specific product is intended for those conditions.

Keys and Keying Requirements

Key quantity, duplication and keyed-alike or managed-key requirements can vary by application. Similar-looking padlocks may use different cylinders and keying arrangements, so technical product information should be checked.

Selecting by Application

Lockers, gates, storage areas, chains and equipment can require different dimensions and environmental characteristics. The hasp, hinge or attachment point should also be appropriate for the intended locking function.
